Hi, my name's Matt. On Medium, and pretty much everywhere else online, I go by WhiteCaneGamer. The 'White Cane' part is a reference to my visual impairment, and the 'Gamer' part is because gaming has always been a huge passion of mine. I’ll be honest, the handle started as a bit of a mask, a way to put some distance between me and the words on the page, giving me the confidence to write openly.

In the real world, I'm from the UK. I'm married with two children, and I work a forty-hour week from home.

The reason for the handle, and the main subject of my writing, is my visual impairment. I have a condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which has left me severely sight impaired, or legally blind.

What does that mean in practice? Imagine you're looking through a camera that refuses to focus, where the whole world is a permanent, fuzzy blur. That’s my day-to-day. It means I need a white cane to navigate the world outside my front door, I can't read a book or a menu, and I usually recognise people by the sound of their voice long before I can make out their face.

I started writing on Medium to try and bring my world back into focus, both for myself and for anyone who's curious. My goal is to shine a light on what I experience, hoping to demystify it a little. You'll find stories about how I do things, the journey that got me to where I am, and my thoughts on where I want to end up.

While my experiences with sight loss are the main reason I'm here, I don't want to pigeonhole myself. Life is about more than just one thing. So, don't be surprised to see stories about being a dad, my thoughts on gaming and accessibility, or just the odd off-topic ramble when it takes my fancy.

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell. Thanks for stopping by to read.
